Is Online Therapy Right For Me?

Compared to conventional face-to-face therapy, the use of online therapy offers many treatment advantages. It is a general consensus that online therapy is sometimes less costly, more easily accessible, less time consuming and offers more anonymity/privacy. Using HICOL ’s online service you get significantly more for significantly less, including full access to:

  • Are worried or embarrassed about being seen visiting a psychologist’s office [*why you shouldn’t be]

  • Have limited/no access due to location (e.g. living in a small town or rural area), don’t have transportation, or are housebound

  • Have medical or mobility issues

  • Need therapy sessions on a regular basis

  • Don’t have much free time

  • Want a safe, healthy and private online avenue to vent about things that may be going on in their lives

  • Are strongly considering suicide or homicide

  • Are dealing with a serious or complex thought and sensory disorder

  • Are not familiar with general computer use and computer basics (technical assistance may help)

  • Have very little privacy at home or have housemates who have access to your computer (As there is a risk that they may read or overhear your otherwise private conversation).

  • Are very young (children)

8 Signs You Should See A Therapist

- The Huffington Post

Our Therapy

At HICOL, we mainly use COGNITIVE BEHAVIOURAL THERAPY (CBT), which is a common and scientifically proven effective method for treating a wide range of mental health issues. CBT involves exploring the relationship between your thoughts, behaviours and emotions to resolve interpersonal, intrapersonal and psychological issues. However, where deemed appropriate, the following modes of therapy may be employed:

This mode of therapy also known as talk therapy is an unstructured/non-directive mode of therapy whereby the client determines the direction and content of each session based on his/her current needs. Two primary goals of person-centered therapy are increased self-esteem and greater openness to experience. Some of the related changes that this form of therapy seeks to foster in clients include closer agreement between the client's ideal and actual selves; better self-understanding; lower levels of defensiveness, guilt, and insecurity; more positive and comfortable relationships with others; and an increased capacity to experience and express feelings the moment they occur.

This mode of therapy typically addresses the need for understanding of self and purpose. It is a philosophical method premised on the belief that inner personal conflict is due to an individual's confrontation with the givens of existence.

MBCT involves a combination of cognitive therapy and meditative practices and attitudes that are based on the cultivation of mindfulness. It is most commonly used to treat and prevent the relapse of anxiety and depressive disorders and to treat people who suffer from chronic unhappiness.

MBSR therapy is a clinically proven method, which uses a combination of mindfulness meditation, body awareness and yoga, and focuses upon the progressive acquisition of mindful awareness of the present. In essence, it helps people become more mindful. MBSR is effective in assisting people with pain and a range of conditions and life issues that were previously difficult to treat in a hospital setting. It has been found to have beneficial effects on stress reduction, relaxation, and improvements to one’s overall quality of life. While MBSR has its roots in spiritual teachings, the program itself is secular. The MBSR program is an eight-week workshop taught by certified trainers that entails weekly group meetings, homework, and instruction in three formal techniques: mindfulness meditation, body scanning and simple yoga postures.

We Provide:

Individual Therapy

Individual psychotherapy refers to one on one sessions with a therapist, whereby the therapist and client alone engage in the therapeutic process. Such sessions are used to resolve psychological, emotional and behavioural problems through the establishment of self-understanding, self-awareness and development of coping skills. Each session lasts 1 hour and the duration of treatment varies for each case.

Family Therapy

Family therapy refers to therapy sessions that engage two or more family members. This mode of therapy aims to create healing through examination and treatment of the family unit within which individuals live. Family systems theory explains that the family system often stimulates and maintains emotional, behavioural and other psychological adversities and so, by working with the family system, changes can be made and sustained in the individual. Family therapy is also, as the name suggests a very effective way to resolve issues among family members that may be causing frequent conflict and distress. Working together, the family gains new perspective on each other’s experiences of one another and learn how they are experienced and what should/could be done to create a more unified and peaceful unit. Each session lasts 1 hour and the duration of treatment varies for each case.

Couples Therapy

Couples therapy refers to the process of counseling romantic couples who may be experiencing difficulty in resolving recurring issues that are causing a breakdown in the relationship. The therapist works with the couple to uncover root causes of recurring disagreements, and to develop together new behaviours, ways of understanding each other and methods for dealing with or resolving differences. Each session lasts 90 minutes and the duration of treatment varies for each case.

Group Therapy

Group therapy refers to the administration of psychotherapeutic treatment within a small group of clients together. This is usually facilitated by one or more therapists and is found to be useful in treating people who have experienced trauma, addiction or chronic illness. In such scenarios clients find group therapy a useful way to receive the help that they need while gaining the opportunity to meet and share with others who have had similar experiences. Through these sessions, clients receive peer support and are able to share and receive coping strategies and encouragement. Group therapy has also been successfully employed in work groups, groups of students and any group of individuals who must work together but find difficulty in reconciling troublesome differences. Again, sessions are geared toward establishing understandings of members’ unique differences, strengths and weaknesses, and generate skills for resolving unavoidable conflict and working effectively with each other’s differences. Each session lasts 90 - 120 minutes and the duration of treatment depends on the type of group (ongoing or specific treatment cycle).
